Any guesses?

What do black silk flowers from Michael’s, a Phillips color changing LED lightbulb from Lowe’s, 330 yards of fishing line from Walmart, and three bottles of baby oil (dyed blood red) all have in common?

Almost finished with piano

Monday, November 18th, 2013 05:30 pm GMT -5

Every haunted house has a piano or organ that plays spooky music.

This is typically done by using a gear motor to actuate the keyboard and hiding a speaker inside the prop.

I always wanted to “one up” this typical prop by using a real Ian that will play real songs. … But typical player pianos are known to be temperamental.

Long story short… I now have a piano that can play digitally stored files.

In this example, I’ve got it running on an iPhone. (Forgive the Christmas music!)

The next version will be running on some type of video repeater that will project a ghostly image of someone playing the piano onto a scrim or fog screen that will sit in front of the piano.

Stay turned for more ….

Food donation for the York Food Bank

Sunday, November 10th, 2013 07:27 pm GMT -5

Today Beth took all the food donated via our annual drive to the collection point that 101The ROSE had set up at the York County Shopping Center.

They were very excited to see the amount of food she had…
I asked her to take pictures to share the news with our friends and neighbors.

They weight the food and track donations by weight rather than unit-count…

The awesome news is that Sinister Shadows made the largest donation to the food drive today.
I still wish it could have been more… But it feels good to be a part of something good like this, and it’s great to know the community I live in cares too!

Thank you everyone!

(Look at all this food!)

Annual Halloween Display

Sunday, November 10th, 2013 03:31 pm GMT -5

Some of you know that I’ve flip-flopped over and over about putting up my annual Halloween Display.

Well, so I don’t disappoint any of you next year – it’s over with.

You may or may not know – that the display was originally a “testing ground” for the things I wanted to build. I wanted to see how well they could stand up to the weather, people touching them and being used over and over again.

It was also a “device” for me to get some free publicity for the haunted house project.

There’s been an accumulation of issues that have now all come together and just make it impossible for me to continue next year.

First off, time has got a hold of the props. They were never made to be outside permanently, and quite honestly not intended to be used for more than a year. But now the stuff is ten years old and the pieces are just falling apart. (see the pictures below)

The second thing is the publicity.

This year we were attempting to raise funding to get a real commercial location for next year – as well as continue our support for the York County Rescue Mission…

On both counts, we failed.

Not only did we end up collecting less than $2000 for our fundraising campaign (And that was with some outstanding media coverage too!) we also gave out more candy than we collected caned goods for the needy.

While no single issue would have stopped me from putting up a display – it’s just not feasible to spend the time and money it would take to rebuild everything when I am attempting to open a business that demands my complete focus.

I would certainly be happy to help / consult with anyone that would like to take over my position of the “neighborhood Halloween nut!

And don’t worry – there WILL be something special going on in the neighborhood for Halloween!

Stay Spooky,
